Wild bergamot or (more commonly known as bee balm) descends from the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is a perennial that can grow to a height of one to three feet. It grows naturally in upland woods, thickets or prairies. According to, wild bergamot has branched, hairy stems with opposing leaves being "petioled and deltioid-lanceolate to lanceolate and slightly toothed". It also has gray-green foliage with flowers ranging in color from white, red, pink and purple.

The Oswego Indians first introduced wild bergamot to American colonists during the time of the Boston Tea Party. Wild bergamot replaced the tea that was thrown into the Atlantic ocean. Oswego tea can be made by soaking young bergamot leaves in boiling water for at least fifteen minutes. Five to six leaves should be used per eight ounces of water. The young leaves can also be used in vegetable salads, fruits salads, fruit drinks, and to add flavor to meat. recommends that wild bergamot tea can be used to treat " colds, catarrh, headaches, gastric disorders, fevers, sore throats, flatulence, nausea, menstrual cramping and insomnia."

Monarda Essential Oil is steam distilled from wild crafted Monarda fistulosa (Bee Balm) flowers.  This plant is also referred to as Wild Bergamot, due to its similar fragrance and therapeutic activity, though Monarda Essential Oil is a very effective anti-microbial, where Bergamot is not.  The common name of Bee Balm comes from the fact that it is a favorite to the local bees.  Historically this plant has been used, by natives, to treat infectious conditions, especially of the skin, due to it's high level of Thymol.

Therapeutic Use:  Monarda Essential Oil is a gentle, yet, powerful anti-infectious agent, especially viral, with the added benefit of being very calming, and helpful in situations of anxiety and nervous tension.  In Aromatherapy Monarda Essential Oil is utilized for it's gentle anti-infectious activity, similar to Thyme Linalol, making it an excellent choice for skin care where you need anti-infectious activity of a more gentle nature.  Like Bergamot the impact that it will offer your products is soothing, and calming.  A great choice for anti-anxiety and de-stress product lines.

Fragrance Impact:  Monarda Essential Oil is similar, in fragrance,  to Bergamot.  Its fragrance is sweet, and floral,  with very light fruity notes.  The scent is fabulous and helps to make any blend a little sweeter without being overbearing.  This is a good oil when you want a floral impact without a feminine impact.  Monarda Essential Oil blends beautifully with Sandalwood, and the other base notes, as well as the other floral notes, especially Neroli.
